How to Save on Data Packages Abroad with eSIM

You're abroad with eSIM and want to avoid wasting your data package? The following guide will help you understand exactly what to set up to preserve your data.
1) Close Apps Running in the Background
When an app remains open, it can continue consuming data and battery.
Android: Tap the multi-task button (three lines/square), swipe apps upward to close them. You can also use "Close All"/"Clear All".
iPhone with Face ID (no home button): Swipe up from the bottom and hold in the middle, then swipe apps upward.
iPhone with home button: Double-tap the home button → swipe apps upward.
Tip: You don't need to "clean up" every minute, but if you notice unusual consumption – close heavy apps (maps/video/social networks).
2) Check Data Consumption by App
This way you'll know which app is "eating" your package.
Android: Settings → search for "Data Usage" → "Mobile Data Usage". You can see by app and change the date range to your time abroad.
iPhone: Settings → "Cellular" / "Mobile Data" → scroll down to the app list and see how much each one used. You can turn off cellular data access for any app.
3) WhatsApp: Disable Auto-Download on Cellular
To prevent photos/videos from downloading automatically when you're on a data package:
WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data → under When Using Mobile Data uncheck all types (photos/audio/video/documents) → Confirm.
When you're on Wi-Fi you can keep auto-download enabled as needed.
4) Photo Backup – Wi-Fi Only
Cloud backup can consume hundreds of MB without you noticing.
Google Photos (Android/iOS): Open the app → profile icon → Photos SettingsBackup → under "Using Mobile Data" select Don't back up using mobile data.
(Optional for iPhone) iCloud Photos: Settings → Your Name → iCloud → Photos → make sure your iPhone isn't uploading photos on cellular, or enable "Low Data Mode".
5) Summary – Quick Rules for Data Savings
Close heavy apps when done using them.
Check which app consumed the most data and limit as needed.
Turn off automatic media downloads in WhatsApp on cellular.
Back up photos only on Wi-Fi.
This way you'll make the most of your eSIM and avoid bill surprises.
