The moment right before you board the plane is the right time to stop and check: Is your phone ready for the flight? Will you be able to connect to the internet upon landing? 1. Check your SIM — or prepare for eSIM
If you're planning to use a local SIM or eSIM abroad, check now that it's installed properly. If you've chosen an eSIM (like nRed's), scan the QR code at home, not at the airport when the internet might be problematic. Your Israeli SIM will stay in the device — just remember to turn off data roaming on it to avoid unexpected charges.
2. Update all essential apps
Maps, translation, flight bookings, banking, and local transportation apps — all of these should be up to date. Don't check this at the airport. Do it now, when you're at home with a stable WiFi connection.
3. Download maps for offline use
Google Maps and Waze allow you to download entire areas for offline use. Download the map of your destination city (Greek, French, Japanese — doesn't matter) now. This will save you stress when you land and need to get from the airport to your hotel.
4. Check the WiFi connection at your home
Sounds odd? It's not. If your WiFi isn't working properly, you still have time to fix it. Check that your device connects strongly, and test your internet speed. This is also the time to download large files you might need on the way (documents, flight tickets in PDF format, and more).
5. Update your phone's operating system
iOS and Android updates are important for security and stability. If there's a new update, install it now — not at the airport or the night before your flight.
6. Check your phone battery and charging cables
It's not exactly digital, but it's very digital. Check that the battery holds a charge, and take all your cables. If you're using an eSIM, your phone is all you need — it's better if it's charged.
7. Set up notifications and alerts with your bank
It's better if your bank knows you're abroad. Some banks block foreign transactions if they're not aware of it. Call or update through your app — do this at home.
8. Sync your cloud
Google Drive, iCloud, OneDrive — choose one and make sure all your important files are synced. If something happens to your device, you'll be able to access everything you need from any other device.
This small checklist takes 20 minutes, but it can save you hours of stress while traveling. Before you board the plane, you'll know that you're connected, secure, and ready.
