South Korea is a country that lives digitally 24/7. From modern train stations to latte cafes that accept payment with a phone tap – here, familiarity with technology isn't an option, it's a necessity. So before you celebrate arriving at the airport in the middle of the night, check our digital checklist.
1. Arrange your internet connection in advance
This is the first and most important step. In South Korea, internet connectivity is like oxygen – you can't live without it. Choose between three options: international roaming (very expensive), a local SIM card (requires a trip to a service center) or eSIM.
If you choose eSIM, it's simple: scan a QR code, install in two minutes, and you're done. Your Israeli line stays active so you can receive messages from home while you browse abroad. No physical card needed, no store visit – everything from your phone.
2. Update your payment apps
In South Korea, Israeli travelers encounter a recurring problem: outdated payment apps. Before your flight:
- Make sure your credit cards are up to date in Google Pay or Apple Pay
- Add the Korean currency (won) to your payment apps
- Notify your bank that you're traveling abroad so they don't block foreign transactions
3. Download the right local apps
In South Korea, Naver Map and Kakao Map are the kings of navigation. Google Maps works, but not always. Additionally:

- Papago – excellent real-time translation from Korean to Hebrew
- Naver Webtoon – if you want something for entertainment during station waits
4. Check your passport status and permits
This isn't directly related to digital, but it's definitely digital: check your passport validity (South Korea requires at least 6 months). Document your passport number in a safe place and in some digital note. Even if you lose your passport, you'll have a copy.
5. Arrange to receive messages from home
When your Israeli line stays active through eSIM, you can receive SMS messages from your bank, insurance, and family without depending on internet connection. This is essential when you're in a part of the country where connectivity is slow or temporarily unavailable.
