A flight abroad is an opportunity to disconnect from routine, but not necessarily from the digital world. When it comes to internet connection abroad, most Israeli tourists start to worry: Will roaming be expensive? What if I forget the local SIM card? How do I connect without hassle?
The solution is not to rely on memory during flight time. A pre-prepared digital checklist will save you headaches and money — and help you stay connected from the moment you land.
1. Choose your connection solution in advance
There are three main options: international roaming, a local SIM card, or eSIM. Each one suits different situations. If you're traveling to multiple countries, eSIM is the most flexible solution — you install it by scanning a QR code without needing a physical card, and you can easily switch between plans.
Decide on your solution at least a week before your flight, so you have time to purchase or order what you need.
2. Check available data plans
Not all plans are the same. The amount of data, validity period, and browsing speed vary. If you're planning to use maps, social media, and read emails, calculate how many GB you really need. Many travelers are tempted to buy a small plan and end up running out of data in the middle of their trip.
3. Save your connection details
When you install an eSIM or local SIM card, save your connection details in a safe place — cloud notes, encrypted notes, or even a photo in your email. That way, if something goes wrong, you'll have everything at hand.
4. Turn off data roaming on your Israeli SIM
Your Israeli SIM stays in your device. It's highly recommended to turn off Data Roaming to avoid unexpected charges. You can still use Wi-Fi, and when you return to Israel, you'll restore the settings.
5. Check device compatibility
Not every device supports eSIM. If you're using a new phone, check in advance that it supports this format. If you're unsure, check the manufacturer's website or contact your eSIM provider.
6. Download essential apps
Before you board the plane, download offline maps of your destination, translation apps, and banking apps. If browsing is slow or unavailable, at least you'll be able to navigate and communicate.
7. Check installation timing
If you're buying an eSIM, install it and verify it works before your flight. Don't leave it for when you land abroad, when you're tired and dependent on an internet connection you don't have yet.
8. Save emergency numbers
Write down the phone numbers of the Israeli embassy, your flight, and your bank. Save them in a place that doesn't depend on SIM or data — a paper notebook, for example.
One minute of advance preparation will save you hours of stress abroad. Choose your connection solution, check the details, make sure everything works — and you'll be ready to focus on what really matters: enjoying your trip.
